Luxury yacht is a much generalized term used for a whole range of boats with no specifications to ‘luxury’. If the word luxury is relative to the size and value of the yachts, then the most luxurious of yachts are the ones owned by the wealthy people of the world. Its history can be dated back to the World War I where the advantages of owning big private yachts were realized. They were owned by only those people who led a luxurious life, whether on a yacht or otherwise. Earlier luxury sailing yachts were classed as ‘J’ and were used in the America’s Cup Sailing Competition. Over the last three decades, there has been an increase in the owners of the yachts which are primarily the Oil Sheiks and the ‘Big Business Tycoons’ like Bill Gates. Owning a yacht is costlier than a luxury yacht charter in Fiji but still the chartering will cost you a lot of money. The more you pay the better the pampering on the yacht you get. With lesser amount it is possible to get the facilities of a good luxury yacht, but you will miss the extra comfort and spoiling on the yacht. Many yacht owners make their yachts available for charter when not used by them. And many have bought yachts with the sole purpose of giving them on charter throughout the year. The rates of the charter vary as per the size and number of crew members. But one thing that is common to all the charter yachts is that 25-30 % is added to the daily charter rate in the name of fuels, drinks, and the berthing fees and a customary 15-20 % is taken in the name of ‘crew gratuity’ for good service of the crew.
